Des Moines, Iowa - Moving Tips & Services

Downtown Des Moines offers a big city setting with a small town feel as many suburbs sit directly next to the city limits. Des Moines is located centrally in the heart of Iowa. Winters in Iowa bring below freezing temperatures with mild to heavy snowfall while humidity levels during the summer can make it feel a bit warmer than it really is. Des Moines is a very friendly city where you can have an in depth conversation with almost anyone, anywhere throughout the city.

Another great thing about Des Moines is that if you are commuting from one side of the city to the other, it usually takes 20 minutes or less to get across town. For example, if you live on the west side of Des Moines in the Urbandale / Clive area, you can jump on interstate 235 and get to the Pleasant Hill, Norwoodville or Altoona in no time. • Monitor the Weather – There is a well-known saying, ‘April showers bring May flowers.’ Every spring, thunderstorms move through the region. Precipitation is heavy for the majority of the month, but it brings May flowers! However, until the flowers bloom, these seasonally predictive thunderstorms have been known to bring tornados. Once summer hits, the humidity can be uncomfortable for newcomers. If you are moving from out of state, you may want to look into hiring Moving Helpers® to unload your moving truck once you arrive at your new home.

RAGBRI is the oldest and largest bike-touring event in the world. Riders bike across the entire state of Iowa. The non-competitive bicycle race starts on the western border of the state and ends on the eastern border. We created a U-Haul SuperGraphic, which features riders from this event.

However, everyone who lives here knows about the long-standing sports rivalry between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. If you go out anywhere in Des Moines, there is a likely chance you will see at least one family completely decked out wearing the iconic yellow Hawkeye bird or the large red "I" on their clothes. Another sports option is the junior ice hockey team, the Des Moines Buccaneers. It’s a great way to quickly feel at home and experience some local sports flavor.
