Hi Nathan. U-Haul set the standard by requiring all the boxes we sell to have a minimum C-Flute structure. Importers, big box "discount" retailers and others pushing discount "moving kits" often offer boxes made with smaller B-Flute material, which is typically only 1/8" thick. That's 25 % thinner than the C-Flute standard! Since it's difficult to really say how many boxes you would need since shoe boxes can vary in size, I would roughly estimate that you can fit about 10-12 shoe boxes into one extra large box. This would mean you would need about 5 extra large boxes to accommodate all of your shoe boxes. I recommend buying 6 or 7 extra large boxes just in case.

U-Haul WILL buy back any unused boxes you have previously purchased from us, but of course they have to be purchased first before we will buy them back from you.
In addition to that, I believe what you were told about free boxes is our take a box, leave a box program. All company owned stores and many independent dealers will have a box outside of their store where customers can drop off used boxes for others customers to use and take for free!
If the location closest to you participates in this program, I would highly suggest checking it out for free boxes.

Importers, big box "discount" retailers and others pushing discount "moving kits" often offer boxes made with smaller B-Flute material, which is typically only 1/8" thick. That's 25 % thinner than the C-Flute standard! Since it's difficult to really say how many boxes you would need since shoe boxes can vary in size, I would roughly estimate that you can fit about 10-12 shoe boxes into one extra large box. U-Haul WILL buy back any unused boxes you have previously purchased from us, but of course they have to be purchased first before we will buy them back from you.
In addition to that, I believe what you were told about free boxes is our take a box, leave a box program. All company owned stores and many independent dealers will have a box outside of their store where customers can drop off used boxes for others customers to use and take for free!
If the location closest to you participates in this program, I would highly suggest checking it out for free boxes.
