I am a long time happy customer that has used U-Haul for many of my own moves since high school, to now many of the moves I have made to support my children, the last of whom graduated in Savannah this month. The reason for this note is that the experience in Savannah this week was highly unusual and I would like to bring this matter to your attention in the hope of a resolution. On June 24th I reserved a 10-foot from U-Haul located in Savannah at Skidaway Auto Repair near my daughter’s house in Savannah. This was changed to be picked up at a new address in Port Wentworth, GA via text message on the 23rd. Everything was the same and I confirmed via your website, it just had the vehicle in this city (nearby) instead of Savannah. Unfortunately, my experience with your company fell significantly short of normal expectations. I encountered multiple issues throughout the rental process, which not only inconvenienced me but also caused unnecessary stress, delays and additional charges for our moving team that was going to work with us Saturday afternoon from 3pm to 6pm. There was no-one at U-Haul in Port Wentworth when we arrived, which was no worry as this was a mobile check out. When I clicked on the link to check out it said I needed to go inside to obtain additional equipment. I called the number and let them know no-one was inside and I would like to check out. I was placed on hold for nearly 20 minutes and was then hung up on. My reservation number was my cell phone number, but the U-Haul operator never called me back. I called again and asked that they contact me with my cell phone if we were disconnected and was on hold for about 20 minutes after providing my cell number and the confirmed reservation info. There was a 10 foot truck and a 15 foot truck in the lot, but apparently they did not have DC numbers on their truck numbers so they could not rent them for me. So, after confirming that they could not rent us a truck (even with a confirmed reservation number) I asked them to look at other sites. After a while they shared they could not reserve a truck at all in the area of any size. This was about 45 minutes into the call. I asked if there was someone I could speak with and after holding a bit more they said I could talk to the traffic department. They gave me the number and after a few minutes I was on hold with traffic. Shared all the confirmed reservation details and that they could not get a truck for us. After a while they shared that we could get one in far south Georgia in Townsend, GA, about an hour south one way. So we took that truck and drove an hour south to Townsend. When we arrived the person at the counter did not know what to do and said we needed to talk with the owner as they would not allow a mobile pickup. They did not have a 10-foot truck there, but it was a 15-foot truck, but the cost was just over a hundred dollars more than our original reservation with a total of $479. So they got the owner on the line and I explained the situation and the troubles we have been through, then she had to get someone else on the line. Again, on hold for about 30 minutes just to get the original cost agreed to and be on our way. As this was going on we had two movers show up to our door in Savannah as we had a confirmed reservation just down the street from my Daughter’s house. We let them know we would not be able to move Saturday as we have to now drive to Townsend so we gave them $100 for their service for the two of them as a no show. So we had a confirmed reservation that was moved that was not able to give to us. Then we had to drive an hour south to finally get a truck and drive back Saturday night. I would like to share the the customer service I received from the traffic team in Savannah was great, while others (especially the first one that disconnected from us and did not call back) was far from satisfactory. Their lack of empathy and willingness to assist in resolving the issues for the confirmed reservation we faced on my initial calls until we reached the traffic person only added to my frustration. As a loyal U-Haul customer who has utilized your services more then 20 occasions, I am disappointed by this experience. I believe that a company of your stature should strive to provide exceptional customer service and have a truck ready when it was reserved and confirmed the day prior. In light of the aforementioned issues, I kindly request a full refund along with the $100 needed to pay the movers we did not use. Thank you. Robert Elz, 770-262-3841
ROBERT E. | First ImpressionsI waited in the lobby for 43 minutes with not a soul on site. After about 25 minutes I rang the service bell a few times, still nothing. About 15 minutes later a mechanic came in and told me the service rep would be in shortly… he was not. The first month was supposed to be free as I had also rented a truck through u haul…. It was not. I set up a 4 digit access code, went back up the hill to begin unloading my things, the code would not work. I went back down the hill and made a new code that finally allowed me access. The whole process was miserable. I did not even get so much as a “my bad man we are super busy” when the service rep finally came in. And the fact that I was still charged for the first month is absolutely ridiculous. If I could give zero stars I would.
