Adaptive Reuse in Jacksonville, NC at U-Haul Moving & Storage of New River
Building History
The Discount Muffler and Exhaust Service building was constructed in 1963 and was utilized as an automotive and tire service facility until 1998. U-Haul acquired the property for adaptive reuse in November of 1999, in order to provide essential truck and trailer sharing as well self-storage to the nearby community. The U-Haul Moving & Storage of New River store is located to the West of the New River in Jacksonville. New River is currently a thriving community oasis where the public can enjoy water activities such as boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. Though the river was not always able to be so freely enjoyed by the public. Historically, there had been a hog waste spill and a nearby wastewater treatment plant that contributed to severe pollution of the river, but the city of Jacksonville was devoted to restoring the past environmental degradation and installed several natural filtration systems such as wetlands and oysters. When the wastewater plant closed in 1998, New River was able to be opened to the public again in 2001.
The city holds the New River Splash Festival every year to celebrate the restoration and activation of the river. One of the partners that helped restore the river is an environmental and educational center called Sturgeon City, located where the city's old wastewater plant used to be. The story of ecological restoration at New River is truly inspirational. Fish and otters have returned to the healthy ecosystem of the river, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a manatee.
Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
