Trailer was not properly secured to my hitch. Half mile down the road, the trailer came completely off my hitch! Only the safety chains saved us from having a terrible accident. Thankfully, the 3rd safety chain engaged the trailers hydraulic brakes & kept us from hitting any cars on either side of us. Although dragging the trailer caused us to fishtail, we were approaching a traffic light so I had slowed to 30-35 already. In addition to the improper installation, what upset me more was the U-Haul vendor's lack of concern when I called him to report the near-accident. Not only did he decline to come fix the problem & properly reinstall the trailer, but he brushed me off on the phone, referring me to U-Haul's roadside assistance. I have been leasing from U-Haul for over 30 years & have always had exceptional service all over the US. This vendor has no business representing U-Haul. As importantly, when the brake chain engaged to prevent it from running away or hitting my vehicle, the sudden pull caused irreparable damage to the trailer hitch on my Lincoln Navigator. I formally request that U-Haul replace the hitch assembly on my vehicle.
