Adaptive Reuse in Philadelphia, PA at U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Philadelphia

Building History

The American Cigar Company was an industry leader in quality cigar products that did not break the bank. Their first cigars sold for 5 cents each with quality ingredients that made them instantly popular. Different cigars with unique characteristics and tastes were available, but all were recognizable by the iconic triangle logo. The iconic trangle became the American Cigar Company's "merit mark". Vintage ads touted how the smoker was safe in accepting the Triangle A merit mark brands as they stood for quality. There were were numerous cigar brands released by the American Cigar Company, but some of the more popular brands included The New Cremo, Buck, Spanafora, Cubanola, The Unico, Benefactor, and the Caswell Club. The Merit Mark American Cigar Company building was built in 1906 and U-Haul acquired the iconic building in 1978.
