Building History

The Coast Packing Company was founded in 1922 by three partners who originally desired to get into the livestock and meat production industry. The company processed selections of pork, beef and smoked animal products. Unfurtunately, the company was imapcted by the economic downturn in the 1960's and profitability suffered. Upper management elected to to remain in the animal processing industry, but altered the company to focus on the processing of animal shortening products. The company survived the reconfiguring and has thrived to become one of the largest animal and animal-vegetable shortening manufacturers in the southwestern United States. The Coast Packing Company building was built in 1967 and U-Haul acquired the building in 2016.

Environmental Impact

Serving U-Haul customers since 2016, this facility was built through adaptive reuse of an abandoned building. Adaptive Reuse promotes infill development in an effort to strengthen communities, with the following benefits achieved at this site:
