Building History

The Market Basket chain of grocery stores that we know today was originally founded by a hard working Greek immigrant couple, Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas. The young couple immigrated to Massachusetts in 1908 and began to tend livestock and grow crops for a living. Ten years later, the couple opened their first store named “The Acre” to sell their lamb, sausage and pork products. In 1920, the family opened Demoulas, their namesake store, and began catering towards other Greek, Irish and French immigrant customers with their grocery offerings.

The Demoulas market grew into a large supermarket and the couple sold the family business to their sons, Telemachus and George, for $15,000 in 1954. The brothers opened a second Demoulas supermarket location and by 1960 they had launched their own private label of products (Demoulas coffee, mayonnaise, tea and matchbooks). Ten years after Athanasios sold the business to his sons, the brothers opened their 6th Demoulas location. George passed away in 1971 while vacationing in Greece, but the business grew steadily under the leadership of Telemachus. In 1975, the company introduced the name “Market Basket” for all new locations.

The Market Basket celebrated their 100th year anniversary in 2020, with over 75 successful locations in operation. Market Basket occupied the building on Commonwealth Ave. beginning in 1953 and when they moved from the location, U-Haul was fortunate enough to acquire the building in 1983.

Environmental Impact

Serving U-Haul customers since 1983, this facility was built through adaptive reuse of an abandoned building. Adaptive Reuse promotes infill development in an effort to strengthen communities, with the following benefits achieved at this site:
