1) We had a lot of trouble checking in. Were told that there wasn't a unit available for us. LONG process. Eventually we got one, so all was well. The people on the phone definitely were not in sync with the people on site. There should be better communication so that customers are not misled. 2) Unit had a rat trap in it. YUCK! Maybe in the halls, but in the unit itself - right next to the mattresses etc. YUCK. Disgusting. Maybe that is standard practice - I don't know - but it was definitely not appealing. 3) We arrived (after a 10 hour drive) to get stuff out of our storage unit. We arrived at 8 pm, as the website said the access hours were until 10 pm. When we got there, it was locked. The attendant said the access closed at 8, despite the fact that there were signs posted ALL OVER the place (front door, gate, elevators, website, etc.) that said the hours were until 10. I think the guy just didn't want to stay that night. VERY VERY Frustrating as we had a very short window in which to do our work. Extremely inconvenient. It's fine if the hours are 8, but just post that onsite and online so people can plan accordingly. Very frustrating to arrive and not be able to get in. 4) Unit was supposed to be climate controlled, but it was definitely hotter inside than outside -- in South Carolina in the summer! I would recommend this location, but would not recommend our original location of Bluff Road - closed and did not notify us or try to change our pick up location prior to our arrival. Owner was not at the location upon our arrival so we had to call traffic to see what we could do.Susan G.

My truck had a low tire and an oil change light on. While these did not cause me problems with the rental, they made it difficult to see the milage when I went to return my truck after hours. I would say making sure these issues were taken care of prior to rentals would improve the experience.Courtney M.

Truck was in rough shape. The elevator wasn't working properly but an employee got that fixed for us. The hallways to get to our unit were extremely narrow and we had to end up carrying a sectional sofa. It is advertised as climate controlled but it was extremely hot in our section.Karen B.

I set a reservation for the Sandhill location with the equipment being available. But received a message that the equipment was not available and I had to travel about 12 -15 miles further away. I also had to return it to that location also. This was a major inconvenience and affected my time with using the equipment.Mark B.

The app that I've used at other locations to pick up the truck was great. I uploaded pictures of the truck before and after, received my keys from a lockbox, etc. This location opened right after 9 and there were a line of disgruntled customers ahead of us. The app was slow and said we needed a reference check to drive (which we've never been asked for in the six or so times I've done this previously) and we could not reference for each other (we are engaged). The truck we received was dented and the gas was on empty, but the app never asked me to show before/after pictures of the truck condition- it only asked for â€œafterâ€ of the inside of the truck and gas. It was very inefficient to pick up the truck, though the return process was better.Johann C.

Regarding my answer of "No" on question #3 about the facility being clean and maintained: The office and front are always kept maintained. However, when I drove to my new rental unit, there were two (2) old/dirty campers and two old cars immediately in front of the unit. Also, just a security note: The side gate that is located near Building D, was left open and did not close the whole time I was in the office setting up my rental and/or when I was in and out of my unit. Other than those two (2) things, everything else is satisfactory. The reason I chose U-Haul was because of the elevator s. When my movers arrived to move me out, the elevator was not working and the only reply I received from mgmt was that they would have to request a work order. I was very dissatisfied that U-Haul would offer units on 2nd floor with inoperable elevators. the truck was full of cigarette ashes, dirt, trash, and you couldn't see through the windshield b/c of the dirt. Miss Green sent a helper to put $30 worth of gas in it b/c she stated it was empty. I got 9 miles before the gas notification stated I only had 49 miles left before empty. I put $50 in it and it took me 95 miles and still had more gas than when I left the original facility. I'm rather sure the $30 worth of gas was never put into this rental truck. The back door also had a pad lock on it, which I ended up having to have cut off. Cost us a lot of time that could have been better spent moving.ANISE S.

Tomega was great with getting me setup after the 15-hr drive from Texas. She even went to the unit with me to make sure that I found it OK and helped guide me in getting the U-Haul trailer closer so that I did not have such a distance to unload my items. I truly wish there were more individuals like her in helping the customer get settled. After the long drive from Texas it was like a breath of fresh air. The facility was filthy and not well maintained. The drive up unit had rats. I literally found a rat that got stuck attempting to squeeze in the doorman died. There were rat feces on top of several of my boxes and storage containers. The in-door, supposed climate controlled unit was hot and not temperature controlled. Items I stored have heat damage-some beyond repair. The cost of the storage units I rented vs the actual service I received is ridiculous. Not only would I never recommend anyone use UHaul storage, I will caution anyone and everyone against it, unless they are prepared to throw away all of their stored items. Additionally, every time I have rented a truck from UHaul, it has been filthy. The most recent rental experience was especially horrible. My reservation was made through the customer service number. The representative assigned me to pick up from a "Stop & Shop" because I wanted to pick up the truck at 7AM. This is not a UHaul location, so, I was unable to scan and check out the vehicle. The owner of this location was rude and not at all helpful. While the location was supposed to open at 8/8:30AM he did not arrive until almost 9:30AM. I was clear that he did not want to do business with women and proceed to only respond to request when my father spoke. However, based on my other horrible UHaul experiences, I'm not at all surprised that this entity was selected as a UHaul dealer. Renting a truck from uhaul to move her stuff from storage, was a disaster- according to online I prepaid for a truck to pick up at the place where I had a storage unit. We got there and no truck - the lady called around and found another place 5 miles away and got us a bigger truck from another facility- no one was there! Had to call First Lady back. To summarize we went to 3 places before we got a truck - that was way bigger than I felt comfortable driving- got us 2 hours behind schedule- not a good experience. Not only did we not get the 17' truck we reserved, they didn't even tell us we weren't getting it at check in. We received a smaller truck and didn't realize it until we got to our moving destination. They did not have the furniture blankets or appliance dolly also reserved in advance. It's okay to not be able to provide what is needed but there should always be advance notice so people can make adjustments or new arrangements.ANDREW E.

Worst experience of our lives!! Reserved a 10' truck weeks in advance only to find out, the day we were to pick up the truck, that there were NO trucks available. You need to change your name to U-Horrible. We will NEVER use you again, will NEVER recommend you, and will make sure our friends and family know just how horrible UHaul is. I had a 10' truck pickup from this location on July 30, 2021. When I arrived at this location the general manager told me that there is no truck available for pickup and she forwarded me to another U-Haul address (103 Zimal crest drive), we reached the middle of the road and there was no U-haul there. We again drove back to the Elmwood location and requested to give us a truck because we need it urgently and that's why I booked. After 40 mins of discussion, she finally gave us a truck but the truck was not in its optimum condition. Will recommend confirming your pickup before leaving for the location.SATYAM P.

Not the facility's fault at all but Uhaul overbooked all the trucks during a move out weekend at a college town. I had rented at 15 foot and had to take a 27 foot that was difficult for me to drive. Then, the equipment I ordered was not available. We had to move with no hand truck and no pads! I had called and spoke with a rep at Uhaul who confirmed my reservation and made it herself. This was incredibly disappointing and a huge deal for us as we had to move my college son out and into a new place. On May 22 I drove 3.5 hours from out of state and had a previously secured reservation for a 7.5 x 10 climate controlled storage unit at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul storage facility. The initial unit I was provided was occupied. After another second floor unit was finally identified I found out the elevator was broken. It appeared that this was related to the fire alert feature of the elevator which continually beeped, had a flashing red light and kept the elevator on the first floor. I mentioned this to the office staff who told me this happens all the time (sounds like a safety/fire code issue to me). I was told my options were to carry my stuff upstairs or pay more money for the same size unit on the first floor. I requested they honor the pricing on my reservation due to this inconvenience and was told it was not their fault their elevator was not working and they refused (I never heard of a business not taking responsibility for not having basic functioning equipment that is integral to the service they provide). Due to the inconvenience I requested that they escalate this to the manager who was not on site at the time. She was called but refused to honor my pricing. While at the Elmwood Avenue location I attempted to call U-Haul customer service but didn't get through to a representative due to unacceptable hold times in excess of 30 minutes. This whole situation seemed like a classic bait and switch scenario and I decided to take my business elsewhere to a storage facility that actually cared about their customers. I spent in excess of 2.5 hours trying to work this out at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul location which also included calling, securing and driving to a competing facility. This was a very bad experience which suggested that U-Haul does not care about my time or my business. This is particularly disappointing since I have 4 U-Haul equipment rentals between May and August. Based on this negative experience I would never use the Elmwood Avenue storage facility and would highly discourage anyone else from doing so.Enid B. | Overall Experience

July 15, 2020 Glen K. LaConey, Plaintiff, v. Jacqueline Matthews, Defendant. Re: DEMAND FOR PAYMENT Via Electronic Mail COMES NOW, the undersigned Plaintiff, Glen K. LaConey ("LaConey"), a customer of UHaul Self-Storage ("UHaul"), situated at 1037 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, South Carolina 29201, seeking remedial and compensatory relief, based upon a pattern of harassment perpetrated by a Jacqueline Matthews ("Matthews") against LaConey; and denial of authorized access to LaConey's self-storage unit; and failure of Matthews to provide a climate-controlled environment for LaConey's unit, while acting under, and by exceeding her authority as General Manager of UHaul. The facts in support of the within complaint are as follows: BACKGROUND: LaConey has been leasing self-storage Unit #E236 from UHaul since early 2019. UHaul represents that it is a "Climate Controlled" facility. The access hours are posted conspicuously. In late 2019, Matthews was assigned as the Manager of UHaul. Immediately after assuming her assignment as Manager, Matthews began a campaign of harassment against LaConey and certain other UHaul customers as follows: 1. Matthews has persistently locked the courtesy restrooms, then denied LaConey the key to the restrooms, on the pretext that "the lock is not working". Customers have urinated in the stairwells and other areas of the facility, presumably for the same reason, as evidenced by the numerous threatening notes posted by Matthews, which LaConey has obtained. 2. Matthews, and other UHaul personnel, have persistently, and discriminately locked the doors to the inside units up to one (1) hour before the prescribed time, without notice, thereby denying inside customers access to their units, to the exclusion of customers leasing outside units. Matthews intimidates inside customers by hovering nearby with her arms folded, and demanding that all customers exit the building immediately, under threat of eviction. Matthews has been observed yelling to customers with inside units, "I'm tired! I'm ready to go home! I'll lock up whenever the [expletive] I want to! I don't give a [expletive]!" Effectively, customers with outside units enjoy unfettered access, once they pass through the security gate, to the prejudice of customers with inside units. Such arbitrary, discriminate and abusive practices perpetrated for the mere convenience of UHaul staff, are inconsistent with necessary safety and security measures outlined in the lease agreement; yet, they are consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 3. As stated above, UHaul represents that it is a "Climate Controlled" facility; however, the temperature inside Building E, where LaConey's unit is situated, persistently exceeds 100 degrees F. Matthews utterly refuses to take corrective action, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 4. Most recently, Matthews has discriminately selected customers, who enter through the security gate on foot, to sign a logbook, to the exclusion of customers who drive through the gate, and/or who lease outside units, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. LaConey's claim is supported by video surveillance. ARGUMENTS: LaConey contends that Matthews has exceeded the bounds of her authority as General Manager of UHaul in furtherance of a personal agenda against LaConey. LaConey further contends that the discriminatory, prejudicial and abusive practices of Matthews, constitutes harassment, are violative of the lease agreement, and may violate the Civil Rights Act. Thus, because Matthews acted in her personal capacity to further a personal agenda, LaConey enjoys the prerogative to sue Matthews individually, and in her personal capacity, in lieu of suit in arbitration. CONCLUSION: Should this matter not be resolved to the satisfaction of LaConey, LaConey shall seek punitive damages in addition to the relief sought. Any evidence developed, during suit(s) against Matthews, shall be used against UHaul Corporation in arbitration. Matthews shall have twenty (20) days to respond to this demand before the matter proceeds to the magistrate's court. RELIEF SOUGHT: 1. Remuneration of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) for the improper denial of storage access and for denial of a climate-controlled environment. 2. That Matthews post the permanently restricted access hours in a conspicuous location within five (5) business days of receipt of this transmittal; and to timely post notice of any further access restrictions, accordingly. 3. That Matthews cease and desist any, and all forms of harassment against, and abuse of UHaul customers. 4.
