Mostly all good for the one day use of a van. Only problem was the tire pressure sensor wasn't working well -- showed the tire pressure low in one tire. Stopped to put air in the tire so the pressure was the same as the front. Tire Warning light didn't go off the whole trip. Upon return I was told that's a problem we have with a lot of vehicles. Was absolutely the worst experience with U haul personal I have EVER experienced. I get it is a high volume location but this individual is TOXIC and is hurting your brand and organization. I understand that we all have days that we don't want to come to work but we have to do what we can to pay the bills. But kindness goes along way. The customer from the front desk recks of laziness and despair. I will be sure to let my friends and family know not to come to this location. My first u-haul renting experience was not good. It was fine. The guy who was checking us out was really unengaged, but I get it. What I don't get was how chaotic the parking situation was when we got back. We got back after hours. We were charged $33, even thought we returned the van with more gas than when we picked it up. We had to go directly to a gas station because we feared we'd run out before we got to our daughters apartment. If we are going to be charged for gas used the van should have a full tank of upon pick up. Employs were rude.Charles B.

After being told that a truck might not be available for my reservation and the pickup location changing 3 times, the location didn't prepare the truck for a 7am pickup time after I confirmed with both 1) customer service over the phone and 2) a team member at the location itself that the truck would be ready at 7am the next morning. This caused me to wait for 2 hours in the morning before they opened up and I had to get the truck at 9am, forcing my moving schedule back 2 hours â€" I had an 8 hour drive and the delay meant that after an entire day of driving I didn't finish unloading at my out-of-state destination until 12am that night, which was what I was trying to avoid (hence why I scheduled a 7am pickup). I didn't get a call the night before from either customer service or the location itself that the truck would not be ready at 7am, which could have saved me two hours of sleep in the morning. How hard is it to pickup the phone and let a customer know that what they ordered and paid almost *$1,000* for wouldn't be ready on time? Will never be using U-Haul again.Haelena B.

The place gave away my rental van that I needed because I arrived at 7:15 am instead of 6:30 am. I called the day before to let them know that the mobile app was not working for me. It would not let me log on, so I would not have been able to get the usual via mobile pick up at 6:30. The customer service rep told me that I could just come inside when they opened at 7 am to get the van. I had no indication that they'd give my van away so quickly. So when I arrived to get my van, they had already somehow given the reservation away to someone else. I refused to leave until they rented me something else. They rented me a larger 16' or 17' truck, much larger than I needed and charged me for that larger vehicle. I go to retrieve the truck and see tons of vans lined up in the lot. I should not suffer and pay because they overbooked. I also would have been done with my minor move much quicker than the 4 hour window had I been able to use a van. I assumed that making a reservation and arriving within the window of time would be sufficient, especially within the first hour of the 4 hour window. Having a larger truck took significantly more time due to parking in a city, etc. I should have been able to use the van as I planned and they should not overbook and punish customers who make a reservation.canaan M.

I never received confirmation for the location pickup - no text or call to reference I would be picking up in DC as opposed to my preferred location. When I did get a "confirmation call" it was conducted as follows: "Is this Alexander? Great are you still good for pickup at 8:30 AM on Friday? Ok great, we'll see you then". No mention of location. Needless to say, I went to my preferred location in VA only for the guy at the front say I was supposed to pick it up in DC. That gentleman was incredibly nice and apologetic, but the folks at the DC location did not own up to their mistake and overall weren't pleasant to deal with. They made me buy these special locks for my unit, then when i tried the key for the lock, it wouldn't unlock it. I called them to cut the lock for me and they refused, they lied to me and told me they don't do that anymore. So when I opted to cut my own lock, i stead of paying for a locksmith, they got upset with me and decided to cut my lock for me, after they told me they don't do that anymore. Also one of the storage units was filled with webs and spiders and there was a water leak that destroyed my mattress, causing me to throw it out, an expensive mattress. It also rusted out my workout metal equipment. My wife and I experienced lots of attitude from these people from day one, from several different employees. Mobile pickup was awful. Will never do it again. Had to wait 10-15 mins to get verified, and then took another 10 mins to find the keys, because the description of the location was quite poor. My move was delayed due to a very inefficient process. I have been a uhaul customer for many moves over the past decade, with the same login/account, why do I still need to be verified?Adeel K.

I reserved a trailer at my locale Uhaul - 10 minutes away - about 3-4 weeks earlier. The day before picking up my rental, however, I was called and told that the trailer was only available at a location 45 minutes away - a 2 hour RT commute. I was very disappointed that the location I preferred and rented from did not have the trailer I had reserved. I think this is an area that Uhaul could work on to ensure that the location where a renter makes a reservation has the trailer in stock on the day reserved. Other than this issue, I rec'd. repeated emails/texts asking me to pre-checkin online. I tried a half dozen times to upload my DL but the system never worked. I also called/emailed Uhaul and no one responded. When I got the rental location, the person there said that since I was picking up a trailer I couldn't check in online. I wish this had been explained earlier. Other than these reservation issues, the location was very good at hooking up the trailer/providing instructions.David T.

The truck was in bad condition. The taillights did not work and the suspension was stiff and dangerously bouncy. There was also a large dent in the side rocker panel. I was in a rush and desperately needed the truck, so I took the truck anyway. If for no reason other than safety, fix your trucks!KETAN C.

Overall not a good experience. The women in the front office were very nice but clearly didn't know much about the equipment. When we called ahead of time to verify if a piece of equipment was there, they told us yes and then when we arrived it was the wrong piece. So I had to go to Home Depot buy the supplies there and then the trailer was put on incorrectly. When we were driving late at night in the rain, the trailer detached itself from my car. This was very dangerous and could have caused an accident. We had to get a hotel since we could not get the part to reattach the U-Haul until the morning. The U-Haul roadside assistance was great and made sure it was very safe to drive the next day. But overall the Washington DC U-Haul was terrible and will not be using them againGuiliana K.

We booked a uhaul the day prior to needing it and we're deciding between many competitors. Next time it will be an easy choice. When we arrived at the original pickup location (Benning Liquors) we had to go through the approval process. Once that was done, we went to get the code for the lockbox but the box was empty. the app reserved the same truck for us and another person and they got the key a few minutes before us and left with the truck that the app said was ours. At this point we were 35 minutes late for picking up what we needed to and sitting on hold with the customer service. we explained the situation and they gave us the codes to the other lock boxes, but they were all empty. we had to go to a different location 15 minutes away and 20 minutes farther from where we were going all of this making us almost 2 hours late. This should have been more than a $50 refund. Terrible experience.Richard F.
The staff member who attempted to hook up the trailer to my vehicle was very rude and told me I didn't have an electrical hook up for the trailer lights, even though my vehicle actually had the hook up. I got underneath my vehicle and pointed to the trailer light hook up, but the staff member proceeded to rudely tell me I didn't have a hook up for trailer lights and that I couldn't rent the trailer as a result. Confused, I went to a nearby AutoZone and spoke to their mechanic who pointed out the hook up, which was bent, but there nonetheless. At this point, I had already received a refund and then went back to the U-Haul store where I finally got the trailer. Different staff members were there who hooked up the trailer with no problem. I wasted two hours of my morning dealing with this issue because a staff member didn't know what he was talking about. This is the only time I've dealt with U-Haul and I was very disappointed with the experience and lack of decent customer service.Jacob M.

Their system was broken so they couldn't complete the rental process for me. I had to complete it on my phone. Then, my access code wouldn't work and they couldn't fix it because the system was malfunctioning. Then, all of the elevators were broken so they had to change my unit to one on the first floor because there were no elevators that we could use to access the other levels. And because they couldn't get my access code to work, I had to have someone stay inside the building at all times to trigger the automatic door so we could re enter the building to fill my storage unit. The staff were helpful but the facility is so poorly maintained to cause all these problems. Overall, an hour of my time was wasted after I had spent 10 hours in 90 degree weather moving and loading my truck. Once the unit was vacant, my credit card got charged. I called to ask for the charge to be canceled. I was only sent a receipt of the charge. So, I follow up again, and said that the unit is vacant, send the refund to my card! Then, in the follow up, they were like, "Oh it's been refunded!" I was like, well, "send me a receipt of the charge being refunded!" Then they did. Real talk, if the receipt of the refund was initially sent, then I wouldn't have made multiple stressed out phone calls to ask for the refund receipt. Just saying. We got stuck with higher level unit and were showed a metal ladder in the office that appeared stable. When we brought our stuff in, however, we discovered the metal ladders near the storage unit were very rickety, unstable and open ended. If was very dangerous for the men involved in the move and we were just lucky no one got injured. Please please to the management, examine each ladder and try to climb up them with a box and a mattress and see how you do, then put two people on the ladder hoisting stuff and see how it goes. Mice urine and rodents were all in my storage unit which severely damaged my items stored. The unit was wet and caused my items to have mold grow on it despite me adequately wrapping furniture in plastic, the furniture still ruined. Overall, this is a very nice facility. My unit is in the new building which is super clean and modern, so that was really nice. But the online check-in process was a mess. I checked in online the night before and got my unit number and access code, but upon arriving to the facility, found it very unclear as to how I actually access my unit. There were 3 call boxes on the wall with no indication as to which one I needed to use. When I tried the call box that seemed to be the correct one, I got a message saying "access denied, not checked in" even though I already checked in online. Thankfully, the employee in the office was a HUGE help as she walked over with me and showed me that I first need to "check in" again by entering my access code into a different box, then needed to dial my code in again at the main call box to actually open the door. There were zero signs or placards that indicated this on the wall, so I would have never figured that out. She then walked me over to my unit only to find that it wasn't ready for move-in. The facility padlock was still on the door and the free disc lock that was supposed to come with the unit was not inside the unit. The funny thing is, I had already purchased a disc lock at the location I picked up my truck from from because they told me (incorrectly) that a free one does NOT come with my unit. The wonderful employee yet again took care of me and made sure I got a refund for the lock I had purchased earlier. So in other words, had I relied on the online check-in process and arrived at the unit after the office had already closed, I would have been TOTALLY screwed because I absolutely would not have been able to get into my unit. Again, the very friendly and helpful lady in the office saved the day for me, explained everything, and got me all squared away, so the overall 4 star rating is thanks to the great staff and the fact that the condition of the facility and unit is really nice. Everything would have otherwise been smooth but it appears there is serious lack of coordination and communication when checking in online (I had similar problems when I went to pick up my truck at another location despite already checking in online and opting for mobile pick-up). If the office/store weren't still open, this could have been a total disaster that would have left me stranded. Shout out to the wonderful staff member that took initiative to get me all squared away. She turned a frustrating experience into a positive one.Aaron H. | Online Move In

The power outage on 8/15 caused me to incur a $200 change from the moving company I hired to assist with my move. Previous storage facilities I have worked with who have promised certain access hours have a generator in case utility outages occur. I understand the utility caused this outage but the storage facility is ultimately responsible for customers being able to access their belongings during the days and times as promised in the customer agreements. I was called numerous times to the point I felt harassed, even though I paid for my unit for the entire month. I moved my things out and had two weeks left to sweep the loose items out so I wouldn't be charged a cleaning fee. Even though they received their money, they wanted to close out my contract before time so they could rent it out to someone else, without refunding me any money for the days I already paid. Basically double charging for the same unit. I will NEVER use them again for a storage place. Too many other companies give better deals and better customer service. Management and maintenance of the facility was fine, but overall this wasn't a convenient location to store things, nor was my unit optimal being on a second level.
