The inside staff person couldn't have been less bored with their jobâ€”helpful is not an adjective I would put on their performance review but poor attitude would be. However, both outside staff we dealt with were VERY professional. We returned our first van because a tail light was not working, and they quickly provided us with a new one. In fact, I would suggest that your very helpful pre departure checklist be updated to include checking if all headlights and tail lights are working properly. Because of the professionalism of the outside staff, I would recommend this site-after all, I'm renting a vehicleâ€¦.Candace M.

I left a parking pass in the uhaul and after 3 calls to customer service, each saying they'd send a message to the location, I've still heard nothing from the location and when I went to check in at the location 4 days after my first call they had no idea that a message had been sent. It's a shame. Every other part of the rental went perfectly smoothly but the lack of any lost and found process is crazy to me and in all likelihood I'll be renting some where else for my next move. I just don't have the time to deal with a business that hasn't figured out how to exist efficiently since the dot com bubble.Tristan S.

The after-hours website did not work properly. The continue button wouldn't activate on one of the screens. I'm not sure if this was caused by returning the trailer a day early or something else, but it was extremely frustrating.Sumit S.
The equipment was fine. The behind-the-counter staff (the "owner") was maddening. He expressed surprise he'd be able to help us, joking about it. He expressed frustration with the computer systems (understandable, but inappropriate). His overall demeanor just increased the stress level of an already stressful experience (moving). To check and record a customer's driver's license, U-Haul sends a text message to the customer's smartphone; the message contains a URL to a U-Haul website, where the customer photographs his license and uploads the photos to U-Haul. This was required; no other way of checking the license was allowed. U-Haul should have its own equipment to check licenses, not require the customer to provide equipment to do U-Haul's job.Curt H.

Over all really poor customer service. Employees are rude and would rather be on their phone. When I dropped the rental off they were extremely unhelpful , didn't even talk to me, stood there and stared at me until I got out of the rental even through the sign says "stay in your rental." The truck had residue and weird greasy-looking smudges. The key housing in the steering column was chewed up, which I thought was odd. I rented it to tow my trailer, but the electrical connector would only transmit for taillights; I had no brake lights or directionals.Timothy C.

There manager Bob is really great to be honest. Both times I rented a truck, the extra equipment I ordered was not loaded in for me and once I had to drive all way back but second time I just said to cancel the extras. When I checked the milage upon entering the cab the odometer milage that was stated was 10 miles less than what was actually on there, so I believe I got overcharged for 10 miles. I will go into UHaul and speak with them about it. They are very nice and receptive when stuff like this happens.Dal C.

The trailer electrical connectors did not fit a standard wiring on the vehicle and none were available at the facility. We ended up using a van rather than trailer - staff were very accommodating considering the situation. I have tried several storage facilities over the years, and this is the nicest in terms of how the building is designed, lit and maintained. The management was somewhat flexible with the payment of the storage unit rent: I was slightly late a few times, and they were understanding about it, I might have had to pay late fees only once. On the downside, something that shocked me about that place is how grossly inadequate the staff is. Over the past few years, beside renting a storage unit there, I have rented a van several times, and also went there to buy packing supplies a few times: almost every time, the staff member who "took care of me" was inadequate: either looking super absent and half asleep, or rude, or even borderline aggressive. Bad attitude, rarely any "hello" or "goodbye", let alone thank you or a smile, you name it. Only once was a lady at the front desk smiling and friendly. All the other times they got me thinking: "Do these people realize that they are part of a business and are taking care of customers, therefore they have to be not just nice, but EXTRA nice? Are they trying to scare people away? Does the management have a strict policy of recruiting only people who just graduated from ... jail?" Today, as I put an end to this 2 year and a half storage unit rental, the guy at the front desk looked like he was dealing with an intensely painful matter, or that he had just had Botox injected all over his face. At the end of the exchange, he recited a memorized "thank-you” formula that went like “U-haul thanks you for choosing them” or something like that. I say “recited” and “memorized” because he said it twice, and either time with the exact same wording and artificial, monotonous sounding voice, like a bad actor who delivers a line he managed to memorize but feels totally foreign to. At the very end, I distinctly said to him “thank you so much, have a great day”. And for answer, I got… nothing. Nothing at all. Clearly there is zero training focusing on how to treat customers nicely in that place. On the contrary, there seems to be a marked trend to recruit only people who suffer from some kind of deficiency when it comes to basic interhuman communication. Weird. Not appealing. The pickup location is decent but I have 2 strong dislikes (I rented a 20' truck): 1) I knew my personal vehicle's auto insurance policy provides coverage for vehicle rentals, so I knew I didn't need to spend the $42 on vehicle insurance, but the salesman tried his hardest to lie to my face about how my auto insurance doesn't cover the uhaul vehicle rental insurance and that "my auto-insurance agent lied to me". In the contract u-haul sends it even specifically states your personal auto insurance will cover the minimum amount for damages. So to the sales representative who was ringing me up, eat a fat dick. 2) the cabin in the truck had a light that stays on the ENTIRE time you drive. There's zero way to turn it off, only cover it. Luckily I packed everything away that I could've used to cover the cabin light so I drove at night with the damn lights on for 5 hours inside my vehicle. The center cabin light in that specific vehicle ONLY turns off after a minute when you exit and leave the vehicle so make sure you have something to deal with that (we passed 4 other uhaul rentals during the drive and none of their cabins had the bullshit light that always stays on while driving) Other than that the store itself is clean and everything else was decentAkshdeep D.

The odomoter does not clock 20 miles driven, it was 8.2 miles from Boston Ave Medford to 864 Mass Ave Cambridge. We filled the tank and you cannot charge $7 for a gallon of gas that is not required! I had to run back and further from the storage and front desk even when it was about to close in order to get settled in. At first they could not find my unit until they did. Gave me everything I needed to move in could not pass the elevator. Run back got a temporary code finally got in after trying before for like 30 mins. Found that my unit had a giant pillar in the middle taking up so much space, had all my stuff ready to go on the floor , left it unattended, ran down asked to change my unit, got a new one.!YAY! Ran up from the front desk area to the unit area couldn’t get in again tried 10mins thinking if I’m stupid and not reading it right. Ran down, told them I can’t get in with this code, the front desk person said oh I forgot to mention to use the temporary code for the second one, I run up to the unit entrance can’t get in. It’s all locked and I put in the number correctly, nothing. Can’t get in! Haha It’s closing time, I got to this place hours ago, it’s been probably 3hrs not being able to get in. I run down it’s closing and someone else helped me got up with me and tried it herself and said I have to put in the code into one door and the other at the same time and it worked! Which was helpful. But the functionality of getting things going there is horrible. I finally get to my unit and it’s up the stairs, I just laugh! At least there’s not a pillar in the middle but the walls are broken and no roofing wire to protect your stuff. Honestly if someone wanted to they could go up on a small stole and climb over and take your stuff so yeah. And to drop off a uhaul during closing hours was terrible too, I could not get into the website at all. It does not work, told us there’s a website that we can do that , spent an hour trying different phones to drop the car could not access it! Had to drive the uhaul van back to our house wait next morning to drop it off while having crutch time with other personal things. Btw the walls of my unit was torn off from both sides so uhh kinda scared leaving it there, I will definitely try to move it somewhere else that is safer! And aside from this location uhaul as a whole reserving a van or truck etc. is frustrating because I reserved it ahead of time so I can travel to my real home town and I was told that they may not have this van at the location I asked. I wanted to reserve ahead of time so just in case it doesn’t work I can cancel purchase from somewhere else but they told us we will let you know a day before pick up. I’m shocked and call them frequent times to know of any updates and told me it could be up to a 100miles and I’m getting worried because if it’s very far I won’t have enough time to move things into the truck and leave from NJ to MA. They said I would be updated or a call barely got any just a bunch of scare notice. Lucky the uhaul van was 25mins away and then asked where the drop off would be they said they would let me know the day of pick up. It was definitely a ride first experienceDaisy H. | Online Move In

The woman that helped me was fantastic, very patient, I think her name was Katrina Very attentive even as It became very busy I did not feel rushed and the customers that were waiting to be help were fine because she continuously acknowledged them with updates of the process. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with any business. I was told that the reason for poor service was due to being short staffed. Meanwhile the employees were arguing because one took an hour and a half lunch. When he returned another woman came out and started drawing on his hand making a "pen tattoo." Another was sleeping on the furniture pads. After explaining that I need enough room to get 3 couches in, I was given a space that was in a small corridor where I could not fit my furniture. I went back to the front desk where I was given another space in the same area. If you have half decent furniture that you do not want gnawed by rats, find another place. Not only are there rat traps everywhere but there are transients hanging around inside the building. They couldn't figure out how to key the access card so they gave me the entry code. I would guarantee that code works today and 6 months from today so not only is it filthy but not secure. Finally, some guy came back from lunch to "help" and gave me a space that was half the size of the other ones. I thought I was being punked. I was at UHaul for over two hours and while still waiting, finally called Extra Space Storage on the other side of Medford. I called them at 4:45PM and was finished moving in by 5:30. Go to Extra Space Storage or put your stuff in your Mom's basement but just do not use UHaul. I had to put extra miles on the UHaul truck and extra gas after being toyed with all afternoon. On top of all of this I still got charged!!! I called the customer service line and spoke with a very nice and capable woman named Katrina. I was on the phone for 45 minutes and was finally told that the money will be back in my account in 3-5 business days. Do not go to this business. Let me write this again. DO NOT GO TO THIS BUSINESS! I arrived to check in with a huge truck full of stuff on the way and was informed that UHaul doesn’t honor storage reservations - it’s first come first served. I showed them my confirmation email with the unit, price, size, and move in date. I was informed that uhaul does not give preference to customers with reservations and that they didn’t have a storage unit big enough for my things. I had to store my things in a friends basement and I have not been able to get a refund from uhaul. I was given two units in the basement that could only be accessed by a ladder/platform. It was really tough to fill and empty the storage units. No one mentioned this up front and if they had I would have asked for a unit on the floor. As there is an elevator it wouldn't matter which floor but just to have easy access and this definitely was not. FYI I booked the first storage unit online then the second in person but before I had seen the first unit. No body mentioned the problems with access and there were no other unit available. The woman who first helped me was amazing — warm, welcoming, and went above and beyond to be helpful. The man who assisted me was rude, unhelpful, pessimistic, and suggested I try to find a storage unit at someplace “down the road.” The storage unit I reserved a month ago was occupied by someone else upon my arrival. I had just driven a UHaul full of stuff from NY to MA, and needed to place my things in the storage unit I reserved. When I told the man who assisted me that the unit I was assigned was already in use, he seemed to think there were no other units available in the whole place, and that I should look elsewhere. The woman who originally assisted me went to look - and found 2 storage units available, from which I chose one and was able to move my things in. Honestly the unit was not built for short people. The 2 step ladder that was there was barely helpful. I did not like my experience at all. Seems my financial info had been removed/lost from the system —not of my doing—and I had to resupply my card which had paid my monthly automatic payment to date. 1) The floors were very rough and needed maintenance very much. When you have a cart loaded and the floors are rough things fall off and break. I am sure there is concrete filler that can fill it in and smooth it out at low cost. 2) The access system was terrible. I had to go to the office twice to get a new card. The third time I went in, the office staff gave me their code so we could get in. This is a terrible inconvenience. 3) I also found there to be problems with the carts. First, the number of carts. This is arguably one of the worst storage facilities I've ever been to. The facility is definitely understaffed and customers end up waiting quite a while to talk with employees and access the moving trucks and storage rentals. The employees are extremely rude and unhelpful, the facility has poor/inconsistent signage, and the maps are nonexistent or indecipherable, so you end up wasting time trying to find your rental location. The facility called me three times about my rental, but made it impossible to talk with any staff because wait times to talk with a U-Haul employee were in excess of 45 minutes. There is also no available first-aid for band-aids, etc. in case you get injured. The mobile return app is also poorly designed and extremely confusing. Overall I liked the experience, but the major red flag for me was the following. About 1 month prior to my move, I reserved a truck and storage unit online. As I turned up for my truck I was told that storage unit I booked online was unavailable, because someone else took it already -- this was a big problem for me, because I had to relocate my personal belonging to storage and this is why I booked it online 1 month before. I was sent around 2 other U-Haul storage facilities in and around Boston, which not only added mileage to the truck I was driving, but also exposed me to incremental labor cost of TaskRabbit, which I hired for the job. In summary, I would not recommend U-Haul to a friend, because of this major issue. My unit has an extra set of steps that I wasn’t told about before renting it. It’s also very far from the elevator. If I had known how far I have to carry large furniture, I would not have rented here. Also, I was not told beforehand that I would have to give out a friends address and phone (the “third phone number” requirement). That’s an onerous requirement. Finally, we had trouble finding the unit the first time, even though we asked staff for directions. We had to go back twice to the customer service desk to ask where it was and even then it she was unhelpful. This was my first time renting from Medford U-Haul. I had a very good conversation with two employees in the morning. However they failed to mention the after hours return fee of $20 that I was charged. I initially had my reservation booked until 3:00 pm. I asked if it could be extended and the person sitting at the front desk agreed to reschedule to 6 pm without any charge. Within 30 minutes of being at the Uhaul facility, I walked into an unlocked bathroom to witness someone shooting up heroine. They were not a customer of Uhaul, but were able to freely walk around the unlocked section of the storage facility. They proceeded to loiter for 1.5 hours, with several men loitering along side her. A separate man (also not a customer of Uhaul as he never entered the card access area) loitered around the facility for multiple hours, and seemed to be selling drugs out of the back of his Penske rental truck. How no Uhaul representative noticed any of this going on is beyond me and incredibly concerning to me. I was at the facility for a total of 2 hours in the middle of the day, so I am very concerned as far as what else goes on at the facility. The condition of my storage unit was average. The people in the office were not very friendly or helpful. I would often be put on hold up to 30-40min and would rarely get my question answered when I finally talked to someone. When I was moving out, they did not allow me to drop my Pod on the property (Unless It was a U-box) so therefore I needed to rent A box truck to transport all of my things to my Pod located 0.2 miles away. I had a question or issue about closing out my unit. I called for 2 days, with a 30 minute wait each time. When I was finally able to get through, I was told I needed to go into the office. 1. I was very surprised when I got to my unit, I was told it was 6' deep x 6' wide by 8' high. Instead, it was 8' deep x 6' wide x 6' high. I really wanted that extra height, but unfortunately this was the very last unit available on an elevator floor. (Units are split level with some on the elevator level, the other up a steep flight of 8 stairs.) 2. I was REALLY surprised to find that there is no lighting at all within the unit, so we were basically moving things around in the dark. 3. The Uhaul team and storage facility were always a pain to deal with. Nothing was ever quick and easy and everything always took 3 more steps than it should. I tried to change some account information and had to call 4 different times Over 2 days to get somebody who could make it work since they never called back like they said they would. Store was VERY busy due to the colleges moving students out of the dorms, yet there was only one person working at the desk who is very overwhelmed by the people standing in line. There did not seem to be a manager or anyone else around. Even though we checked in online we still had to go into the store and wait in line because our code did not work, and there was no free lock inside the storage room they initially assigned us and once we got the lock it did not work because the door was not lined up properly. We had to go back and wait in line again in order to be switched into another room. There was a gentleman who was taking people to their storage rooms and he came with us to make sure that the room was satisfactory this time and that the lock did work. We rented our unit on March 11th, the day before U-Haul announced that college students could have one month for free. I have called the local store several times and no one answers and I get transferred to the National customer service who keeps telling me there's nothing they can do that I have to talk to the local locationfor the free month since we rented the unit the day before the free month was offered by U-Haul. I will still continue to call because the only reason we rented this unit was because my daughter was told to move out of her dorm and we knew if we didn't rent it immediately we would probably not be able to get a spot. The workers we dealt with were friendly, but the store seemed to be understaffed, and the staff that was there seems to be overwhelmed.
