U-Haul Just Lost a Longtime Customer for 40+ Years Because of One Experience I have been a U-Haul customer for more than 40 years. Multiple times each year, U-Haul was always my first choice whenever I needed to move items too large for my personal vehicles. Hertze or Penske have only been used by me when U-Haul had no convenient vehicles available at that time. Never once have I ever had a negative experience using U-Haul until yesterday, November 30, 2022. The way I was treated, the way I was made to feel, will immediately resurface whenever I see a U-Haul truck in the future. This one event was so negative and severe to me that the U-Haul brand for me has changed negatively. For this reason, November 30, 2022 is the last day I ever rent a vehicle from U-Haul whenever I rent a vehicle. I rented a cargo van (BE3067N) at the Bronx Park, 2800 White Plains Road, Bronx, New York location. The side cargo door visibly showed that it had been previously damaged. I didn't notice the outside latch does not open the door, until I had the truck packed too much to open from the inside. I made multiple trips and the malfunctioning door caused many problems with my move. One doesn't appreciate an outside door handle until she/he needs it but doesn't have it. When I returned the vehicle, I informed the attendant who received the truck from me after he asked â€œHow was everything?â€ He told me if I wanted to notify management of how I was inconvenienced, I could go inside the office and do so. When I notified the agent at the front desk, she told her manager/supervisor seen in the photo to the right. (this portal is not letting me post the photo) The manager asked the subordinate: â€œDid he call Roadside assistance?â€ I answered â€œNo. I was in the middle of a move and had a packed van that couldn't receive maintenance at that time...â€ As I was about to finish my response by indicating..that I couldn't call wait for Roadside Assistance to come fix something the company hadn't previously fixedâ€¦, the manager abruptly began verbally scolding me for not performing my contractual obligation to call Roadside Assistance if I experienced any trouble. I explained that I have been a loyal U-Haul customer for 40 years, and now, I was just hoping for some empathy and maybe someone just saying: â€œWow! I fully understand what you went through, and I am so sorry that happened to you. Next time you come in, ask for me and I'll make sure we give you that great service you received for the past 40+ years.â€ None of this ever transpired. One thing I didn't want was any type of discount, refund or reimbursement. The trip cost $149.75 and that is a very fair and reasonable price for what I received. I prefer to pay even twice or three times more than this amount from now on in order to receive greater customer service. After about 20 seconds of scolding, and me verbally pushing back, it became clear that I was not going to accept the You, the customer, should've called roadside assistance â€¦.that's on you! narrative, the agent then just dismissed me, when on to serve another customer, while smiling an insulting smile, shaking her head in a way that clearly let me know that she didn't care about my experience, and that she wanted me to know it. I never got rude, hostile, disrespectful or non-professional with her, but I was assertive. I emphasized that I would have been happy with nothing more than an, I'm sorry, and I vocalized my dismay to instead hearing only thing â€¦What I should've done that the company failed to do. She wouldn't acknowledge that it was her location whose system (1) failed in letting a defective van get rented, and (2) failed to notify the renter. Instead, she placed the onus on me. Seconds later, how I was treated became the new story to me, strongly overshadowing the broken door inconvenience. The 2nd employee in an innocent but seemingly patronizing manner said to me: â€œWell, I'm sorry.â€ I asked her what specifically is she sorry for, and before I could finish asking: â€œAre you sorry for my van door experience, or for how this U-Haul agent has just treated me?â€ â€¦ the manager laughing in a very insulting tone said: â€œGirl â€¦..he don't even know what you sorry about Hehehe.â€ The level of comfort this manager displayed in how she treated me was so easy that I knew I was not the first U-Haul customer who was subjected to that type of disdain, disregard, and dismissal from her. The way this interaction played out on the customer service floor seems apparent that this conduct by this manager and in this company, is not a one-off. I believe U-Haul has changed with respect to its service culture. Maybe U-Haul's current leadership is aware of such behavior but are ill-equipped to eliminate it. Or maybe a newer brand of customer service norms in how customers can be treated have become pervasive and tolerated. Either way, for me this manager's conduct is the new U-Haul brand. I will find a more expensive competitor who values displaying the type of customer service empathy, respect and appreciation that 40+ years of loyalty should buy. I wish that someone at U-Haul could view and watch an audio-visual recording of the incident if such exist. Outside of the facility were about 5 guys asking if we needed help moving. A couple of them were smoking marijuana. 1st truck I received, engine light turned on as soon as I left the lot. I did not read the confirmation email until I got to the Uhaul & could not pickup my truck until I set up a user & pw. The confirmation message should be clearer ; i.e. you are not ready to pick up your Uhaul until you set up on app!! â€œ it said something like â€œoptionalâ€ but it's not optional. Thankfully the Bronx Uhaul had the nicest, kindest women named Tanickqua running the service counter. She had the patience of a saint! First, the outside yard attendant was of no help when I arrived to pick up the van. This was my first time picking up in the yard instead of going inside to the counter. I was following the app but wasn't having much luck with it. I asked him to assist me. He was not cooperative in helping me to retrieve the truck. He didn't know what to do so he told me to go inside to the counter. When I went inside, I asked the assistant can she help me. She was very dry when I asked her how to check in properly because the app was giving me problems to check in. She told me, why did you try to check in instead of coming inside first. That's what the app instructed me to do the o check in the yard. She passed me off with some info and told me to go around the back and put in the code on the app, DUCK. She didn't explain where or what to do. After finally figuring out where the lock was, I tried six times to put in the code with no luck. I went in to ask the manager for help also. She also acted as if it was a bother for her to assist me. I called U-Haul customer service and they also heard how rude and unprofessional she was with me. It is on a recorded line. I explained we had tried to put in the code, DUCK, and it did not work. She did something to the lock and it finally opened. She mumbled some words to me as if I didn't know how to spell duck. Again, this was on the recorded customer service line as they were listening. The lock was stiff with dust and dirt which makes it hard to turn the little knobs. My whole experience with this U-Haul crew was very disturbing. I have always used this site for years and never had a bad experience like this before. Returning the van with the same rude attendant was troubling also. He told me not to check in as the app instructed me to do so. He argued with me about not doing what the app instructed me to do. All three U-Haul employees needs to be retrained on professionalism and courtesy to their customers.Carla P.

I have rented uhaul many times as I use the vans for my business. This time my experience was horrible and stressful. When I reserverd the van via website, I specifically checked that I would like to check-in via counter and not mobile. The women at the counter did not even attempt to be helpful and said I have no choice but to do it via my phone. I attempted numerous times and it kept making me take pictures of my id. After my 30th attempt it finally gave me a van. I searched the whole parking lot by myself looking for it only to have to get reassigned another van. After looking for this van I was told I did not fill everything out and had to start the process over. I was furious at this point since my checkin is usually 5-10minutes and now I am here for 25 minutes and still don't have a van. I went back to the woman at the counter and only then did they check me in themselves. I was late to my deliveries and the experience left such a bad taste with me that I will not be using uhaul anytime soon.YELENA R.

I really can say that I have had the worst experience in my life with the manager of this site of U-Haul. I was resting in the parking lot because I found no hotels in the Bronx New York on that Saturday morning so I had to stay in the truck until they open that U-Haul store I had spent 5 1/2 hours driving from Pittsburgh to New York City I was tired so I decided to go into the parking lot of U-Haul at 2800 White Plains I made the biggest mistake of my life, because around 6:20 o'clock I notice a woman coming towards the the facility. As soon as she got out of her car and started walking towards the entrances, I said good morning Madame! After that I ask her excuse me! do you work here? Oh my God I made the biggest mistake this woman was so nasty and so disrespectful to me that I had to close my car window not to hear her Verbal aggression. I told her that I will talk to the manager inside about this treatment But I was in shock she was the manager and she told me clearly that she was like the owner of the place! I wanted to leave but I needed to finish what I went there for, so I tried to put no mind.
