The attendant in charge of the variety store did not come out to inspect the van in my presence. I was given the keys and told to bring it back with a full tank. However, the tank was at around 95%, but being in a hurry I did not go back to report it. The total distance driven was 26 km., but the fill up cost $27.74 (18.06L). This was mentioned to the attendant upon my return, and was told that the information would be passed on to head office. I also e-mailed head office with a request for a partial refund, but haven't heard back. It has since occurred to me that had the van been damaged before I used it, could I possibly have been blamed, and charged for it? Lesson learned: Do your due diligence, and do not take shortcuts!
