Tires for Alaskan winters need to be better. I was in danger several times in just hours because I could not get traction at intersections or hills. The moving van slid sideways at one point going down a hill. So I suggest studded tires for winter. Also I was charged for SafeMove of $14. I never asked for this to be added. To top it off I had to clean the steering wheel because it felt gross. I went through 4 wipes. They were all brown when I was done.Jamie D.

The young man working the front desk lacks in customer service skills. I feel that he is not knowledgeable about the storage options and he did not provide clarity about location of the unit we rented and did not mention that uhaul had their own locks on the unit. The person that answered the phone when we realized we could not access the unit due to being locked, was very helpful and had someone come unlock the unit for us very quickly. If you want a square to put your belongings in, Uhaul has expensive rooms for that. If you want to wait forever in line, Uhaul knows how to waste your time. If you wanted to be offended, Uhaul hires the best customer service people for that. I'll tell you, if I am providing you a good amount of money for a weak service, and your employees give me any attitude (hateful female I have encountered twice), or do not make me feel valued as a customer; I will create accounts around the web and make this review noticed. You want to waste my time, charge my card and hold my money, and then when I call to speak with the General Manager, Steve Womack doesn't answer. What a disgrace to the Uhaul community. Two front desk guys were terrible. They still charged me $24 for gas even after I filled it up 4 gallons for 18 miles I used. I asked for explanation and told them that's not right. The uHaul we rented had completely bald tires. They worked so poorly that we almost got stuck in the (unplowed) parking lot, and got stuck twice during the day because the tires were so bad. I have lived in Alaska for 25 years and have never experienced such bad tires, or a vehicle that is so poorly prepared for the weather. I will not rent from UHaul again in the winter ever again. At the very least, you need to disclose that your vehicles do not have 4WD nor do they have adequate winter tires.Kelsey S.
Be more careful about level of gas when checking out. The needle wasn't quite on the fill mark. I was told the vehicle's tank was full, but I drove the van only 12 miles and had to buy 2 gallons of gas for the needle to go to the fill mark.Randolph V.

Rented truck. Not contactless, still had to pick up key inside. Also, Didn't have the initial truck offered by online, so had to stand in the snow trying to figure out where it was. Then, realized the move would take more than the 6 hours we initially signed up for. Got it changed inside, no problem. Found out the next day that I needed one more 24 hour rental period. Uhaul.com site down. Waited over two hours on hold, finally just went over to the location. Had me write down my name and phone number on paper to get a call back when they could process my extension. A Uhaul representative never called. Looked at the bill today, was charged for 3 rental periods in 48 hours (with insurance associated). Now have been on hold 15 minutes, as I write this. Wondering if I should sit here on hold for another couple hours (never got through last time) or just drive down there for the third day in a row. VERY UNHAPPY.Kevin M.

I received the truck with the tank half full. I used only 1/4th of a tank, as you can see from the miles I used. I filled it anyway which was $70.00. I should of only had to pay $24.00. My experience with Uhaul storage was perfect until the day I moved out. I had reserved a 10' truck to move out my belongings on the last day of my billing cycle. The reservation was for a return trip with a base cost of $19.99. When I arrived to pick up the truck, I was told by the Asst. Mgr there were no 10' trucks to rent, that Uhaul had overbooked. I was then told there was a 10' truck but it was only for one ways and it would be $118 and I'd have to drop it off at another Uhaul location. I was not going to pay $100 more for a truck especially b/c this was not my fault. Nor did I have the time to drop the truck off on the other side of town. I instead started unloading my storage with my car but because the location closes at 7 I had to return the next day to finish. The Asst Mngr said I wouldn't be charged for the next month since I was now on day 1 of the next billing cycle, but I was charged and had to speak with a Uhaul rep (Raymond - who was excellent!) about reversing the charges. I had to take off the 1/2 half of this day from work in order to empty the storage unit as well. Lastly, when I asked about the $50 guarantee that's posted on your wall behind the counter, I was told my reservation didn't qualify because of the overbooking. This makes no sense. I made a reservation - the reservation was not fulfilled. It caused me all sorts of trouble, but the guarantee isn't valid because you overbooked? I have worked as a Logisitics Manager the past decade and have both used Uhaul for personal moves as well as for work related moves. I'll be hesitant to put myself in the same position with the company going forward and will be looking at other options.Jeff F. | Overall Experience

I did not rent any equipment in the truck and didn't get any equipment in the truck then was told i used it and stole it and got charged $90 for it and a $5 use fee. I got the truck with 1/4 tank of gas drove the truck 11miles total filled the tank back up to 1/4 tank then returned the truck and got a $30 fill up fee and a 10 gallon fill up charge for $32. I have now been charged $157 more then i should have bee charged. I will be in and pay the $68.38 that i should have payed for this rental not the $225.38 because the company messed up. For the next customer you can look at the truck before you rent it and look at the truck when it comes back so that you don't screw over paying customers who own business and would use and recommend your business to others but instead you would rather overcharge and start a relationship on distrust.Gustav S.

Verify billing. I was charged alot more than what I was told. I returned the truck earlier than scheduled and fueled the truck past the full line when it was at the full line when I picked up the truck. My original bill amount should have been under $70 but instead I was charged over $100. I sent an email and haven't heard anything back yet. This would be the only frustrating part of my experience. Cab and cargo area smelled strongly of cigarettes. Really reeked. Counter staff were unfamiliar with checking out vehicles and other staff that were supposed to bring vehicles to the front for use could not be located to bring up vehicles. Watch closely for fraudulent charges on your bill. I turned in my vehicle on schedule, 1 hour and 36 minutes before closing, right under a lit-up neon "open" sign. The check-in employee said all was fine and he would email the updated receipt (I was due a credit because of lower than expected mileage). When the receipt arrived, he had added a $20.00 "after hours service fee."Christopher K.

This was one of the worst experiences ever! I made my reservation online, picking the pickup and drop off location and it then gave me a total of $81.00. The next day when I went to pick up the trailer, they charged us $300 and told us our drop of location doesn't exist anymore and we would have to go to the next town to drop it off. That town is almost 200 miles out of our way mind you. When we tried to return the trailer and figure out a different way to get our new appliances home they said no, and told us its the other locations trailer now you have to bring it there, we won't take it back. Worst costumer service ever, not helpful at all. The web site needs to be updated. I will never be using uhaul again. Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Shame on you uhaul.Karl K.

The equipment worked well. I wanted the damage insurance and asked three Uhaul employees, two of whom are in traffic, for the replacement cost of the trailer I was renting. They were happy enough to read to me the exact pages on the web site that I had in front of me and I had already read; somehow that was supposed to be an answer, but it was more a nuisance than useful. Since Uhaul has its own insurance company, they ought to all able to provide the replacement cost, or so I thought. I asked that they get that info for me. They did not provide that informaton, so my efforts to be properly insured against property damage of Uhaul equipment were drowned in trying to sidetrack the customer. I'm willing to bet I would find out very quickly if I had a wreck and owed Uhaul money for damages. There seems to be something wrong with insuring through Uhaul when they won't tell the customers what the replacement cost will be if the customer totals the equipment. "Is the pea under thimble 1, 2, or 3 ? Place your bets and take your chances at winning." Or losing when Uhaul won't provide the facts that would provide customers the information to make informed decisions about Uhaul's insurance "plans".Donald S.
The personnel apparently didn't actually check me in and it sat for a couple days, and I only noticed that when I saw a surprise charge on my credit card for two extra days. This is the second time this has happened to me between two different Anchorage U-hauls. I received an email saying that the money was refunded, but once again, it wasn't instant. There was only one customer service representative who was on the phone while I was checking in. It took her about 15 minutes to get me into my rental and she was gone for 10 of those minutes. When I returned the vehicle, one person told me to just leave it and I'd get an email receipt but then another came up and asked me to wait while she checked the mileage (4miles) and then also told me I'd get an email receipt. Overall the experience was less than pleasant seeing as I only needed to move a few items. Next time I'll go through another company.Kailyn H.

The staff was very nice at both locations, but I have an issue with U-Haul's policy on filling up their fuel tanks before renting. Fuel tanks that are not returned full are charged $4.00/gallon, yet Uhaul doesn't actually go and fill up the tank. Then it falls on the next customer to return the tank at the same level which is very hard to do. In my case, Uhaul rented me a vehicle with a 1/4 tank, I filled it most of the way up not knowing exactly how much it would use and when I returned it there was still half a tank left. I didn't get any reimbursement so they were paid $4.00/gallon by the previous renter, didn't fill the tank, and then made another quarter tank off me. Doesn't seem right and the solution would be to fill up the tanks before renting them out like every other car rental business.Kavik P.
