On Wednesday I moved from New Haven CT to Boston MA with my rented uhual. A journey that should have been a smooth three hour drive turned into a nightmarish 5 hrs. My move was made very difficult because I was given a truck with a faulty battery so when we stopped to get food, the truck wouldn't come back on. So we were left in the middle of nowhere without a way to get back on the road. Contacting road side assistance was a nightmare. I was on hold for at least 15 mins before I got anyone on the phone. They gave me an estimated arrival time of an hour for a repair person to get to us. Luckily we were able to get the help of people around us to help jumpstart the car and we were able to get back on the road before any uhual agent arrived. My second time dealing with uhual roadside assistance was exponentially worse. The truck wouldn't start again for the second time when we were ready to drop it off the next day. There was noone around to help this time so we really had to wait for road side assistance. It took over four hours before anyone got to us. Allegedly the person contracted was given the wrong address and phone number twice. I gave instructions for the person coming to call upon getting to my address so that I could them lead him to where the truck was parked which was a two minute walk away from my apartment. None of my very simple instructions were followed. Instead after arriving four hours later, he called to tell me he was leaving because he had circled the address twice and didn't see a uhual. If he had called me when he got to the address, he wouldn't have needed to keep circling. I would have easily directed him to where the uhual was. This really frustrated me because I kept begging him to come back because I was at the address and would lead him to where the uhual was but he wouldn't listen to me. He asked me if I was paying for his gas and was very rude to me the entire conversation. My only response was to keep begging him to come back because at this point, there was no way I was going to wait another hour or more for another road side person. Thankfully, he agreed to come back and sure enough he saw me and I directed him to the uhual. The car for jumpstarted in all of two seconds and we were able to drop off the uhual finally. I feel strongly that the batteries for this uhual should have been checked before it was handed to a paying customer. I didn't pay to get bad batteries and request for a compensation for all the difficulties I had experienced using this truck.

For the second time in a row, I reserved a dolly and utility cart on line to find that this UHaul site on Whaley Ave. did not have them. This is not the case in Hamden or at the State St. locations. Why is the site in a predominantly Black neighborhood under resourced in this “easy to fix” way? It’s unacceptable.

On the phone, I reserved a 15' truck for 24 hours, 1pm-1pm. The confirmation email I received reflected this. When I got to the location, they had a different reservation under my name, and they did not have the truck I needed for the timing I needed it. The gentlemen there were helpful, apologetic and gave me a discount on the mileage for a smaller truck, but it was surprising to me that their system could get a reservation so wrong when the phone call and confirmation email were accurate.

When I went to return the truck, it was 5 minutes before 7 pm. Even though the location was supposed to be open until 7, the staff person refused to check us in and insisted that we use the website to check in. He did not leave until well after 7 pm yet would not allow us to return the truck with him. As a result, I had to go through a ridiculous process of returning the truck via the website which took me 1/2 hour because of all the photos that I had to submit (e.g. gas gauge, odometer reading, cab interior, cargo section of the truck, location in lot where truck was parked). Between the problems that I had when picking up the truck at another location and my drop-off issues at this location, I have concluded that U-Haul is not customer friendly and is a poorly run business. What a disappointment.

A/C did not work well Brakes were horrible. I had to drive below speed limit which prolonged my trip. (Moving 2beds and 1 futon took 3.5 hrs)

I was charged 57 dollars for gas fees for 7 miles! this is completely not acceptable. The receipt clearly states that I've returned the care 12 hours later than i actually did. Got scammed unfortunately by a company that has "high standards".

The mobile check-in was a disaster. I made a reservation a day or two in advance and chose the mobile option. When I went to log in to my account with my phone on the lot, it said I had no reservations. I proceeded to try logging in with the order number, successfully identified my reservation, and made it through the photo identification, only to be rejected for my phone number already being in use. I spent 67 minutes with customer service trying to resolve the problem, and though we were able to come up with a workaround (requiring me to involve the phone numbers of all my family members and roommate), it's ridiculous that I had to go through this at all. Best I can tell, it was a database failure to match records across accounts and reservations. I hope you fix, as I won't be using uhaul again if there are reasonable alternatives next time I move.

My dealing with Whalley was pleasant, what I’m NOT happy about is that I made a reservation to load a UBox at the Whalley location and it wasn’t there. The attendant said that location doesn’t have Uboxes and that it was likely at a different location. I showed him my confirmation email which clearly showed Whalley ave as the location for loading, he told me that the system records my “preference” and that I should have received a message the day before informing me that I needed to go to a different location. I didn’t receive any correspondence about this nor was I told by the agent I spoke with on the phone when I made my reservation that this was even a possibility. When I got to the other location the employees were seemingly distracted (with some other customers who were equally confused) so it was very hard to get any information about the status of the reservation or if I was in the right place. Ultimately everything was figured out but it was quite stressful not knowing what the status of the box was right before a cross country move.

I rent last from this location 2 times in the past 2 weeks . Dropped of the uhaul on June 1 and again as for last month the guy was argumentative and charged my card 3 times 4 different charges. He said the truck was over a quarter of a tank and it was actually on empty which I showed him so before I could get started I had to go get gas. Called to tell them June 2 that my card was charged 4 times and they couldn’t figure out why but couldn’t figure out how to fix it. That’s 2 times I had poor experience at this location in a matter of 2 weeks. I won’t be returning as a customer and will post and tell whomever I could tell not to deal with uhaul location there. Worst experience. I can see one time ok things happen but 2 times is a problem.

Even though I used the mobile app the counter guy asked me the same information. I kept telling him I booked it using the mobile app but he kept setting it up online. So what I thought would be a quick in and out ended up taking over 20 minutes.

For the truck rental, there was an issue with the gas tank level. Not sure why each vehicle is not full to start and bring it back full would make it easier and much more simple. Bigger issue was that we purchased 4 wardrobe boxes. Price on the tag was $12.95 yet we were charged $13.95. I questioned it since the sign said a different amount. The guy was brusk in his response, said it was what the computer says,and that he would change the sign immediately I went to return the vehicle later. Same guy was there sign had not been changed, and he argued with me about the level of the gas based on what one the other U-Haul employee told us. I understand it is only $4. However, if the price is wrong, it should be honored and then get the sign changed. Neither one of these things happened. Would be great if U-Haul would do something to compensate. From my perspective, not a great place for customer service!!

The only thing I would suggest improving is: please let the customer know that it is OK for the engine light to be on... I was quite nervous when I notice that.

Excellent customer service. A very good value for your money. My truck atleast was fairly new and in excellent condition. But just looking around the lot before I left you can see that the whole fleet is somewhat new. To me that's a good feature to have not worrying about breaking down because the vehicles are old and have a quarter million miles on them.

I was told at pickup that the tank of gas was full, and to therefore return it full. But I filled up the tank and it took 4 gallons when we only drove 7 miles total. This cost me more than it should have as a result.

The truck had some weird cloudy liquid all in it. It got all over my bed. I ordered both $10 furniture and appliance dollies but they only had the small floor dolly and only took $10 off for not having the two other ones.

Make the policy for refuelling the uhaul more clear. I got a $30 charge for "Fuel-up" service fee after driving for a gallon of gas. This is ridiculous.

You stated on multiple occasions that the mileage for the truck would get the same discount as the mileage for the van. Also the truck was in the wrong spot, the furniture dolly was missing, and the keys weren’t locked.

Stop over charging customers for things they didn’t rent and then state the will be credited at the return of the truck. To date over a week later and still no credit. Horrible way to rip people off.
