Brian HI rented the pickup truck to pick up a load of wood in the next county south of me. We hand loaded the wood and put a harbor freight blue 5 mm tarp down over the bed liner just to be sure we did not hurt anything. When I pick up the truck no one reviewed the condition of the truck with me and the truck was dirty on the outside even though the cab was relatively clean. I had attempted to reserve this truck for 3 weeks before it actually became available sent somebody kept extending their lease of it. I clean the exterior rear wheel wells swept the bed out and rinsed it out with my garden hose. I hand cleaned the cab with a damp cloth and turned it in to the manager, Chase Morgan. Chase said to just leave the keys with him because he had three other vehicles to move around on the lot so I trusted him. 2 days later I got a bill that included $150 for damages to the truck which included two little nicks to the bed liner and what looked like a smudge to the clear coat on the truck above the U-Haul sign. I drove the truck and we didn't rub up against anything. U-Haul charged us $542 worth of damages. I took their insurance policy so I only had to pay $150 deductible. I imagine the previous lease or of this vehicle scraped the clear coating and knicked the bed liner and no one probably even noticed since the truck was dirty when we received it. The store manager took no responsibility for this and basically head behind corporate policy. So I have requested an action claim to dispute this. Customer beware
mikeeal yThis location in Asheville, NC should be reassigned to better management. I showed up for a 9:00am pickup and when I walked in there were 8 people in line waiting. There was only 1 employee working at the location on Swannanoa River Rd in Asheville. After 90 minutes I got my truck. People in line were very upset, frantically trying to find other accommodations with their cell phones. THIS HAPPENED: Walking to the truck, I asked the employee, "Hey man, did someone call in sick or what? You guys shorthanded?" He poignantly replied, "No it's always like this. I'm about to quit. It's like this for the manager too and he doesn't even care." I would say if this comment gets to you, it should probably be addressed. JC

U-Haul customer service is of no help, so they gave me the manager’s contact information- Chase Underwood. Called him 2 days in a row and left messages, also let the attendant at the store know when he spoke to him to please tell him to return my calls. He still hasn’t, but is sending me an email to please rate my experience. Funny.

Monica SI made a reservation at the Sweeten Creek - Asheville NC - to pick up a truck at that location for 3/29. When I arrived they told me my reservation was made to pick up in HICKORY NC- almost 2 hours away. I paid for labor to arrive at the sweeten creek rd location at 11 am. I was told I had to go to another U-Haul location to get the truck - that took an hour and cost me $119.00 in labor. I was gone a $10.00 refund and so I am Asking for a $109.00 refund. I have used U-Haul for my moves since 1990- eight moves that I can count. I’m fact I just from Winston Salem and the experience and customer services was great. I can’t say the same for this experience - the personnel at the Sweeten Creek location did little to correct the problem other than to transfer my reservation to the other pick up location. I made my drop this evening In Smithfield location on 210 and he was very helpful and was unable to do something right then due to not having everything done in the Asheville location. Jeremy pRented a 10ft truck in advance. The morning before my 11:00 pickup I went online filled out the paperwork to save time. I got there and stood in line over 30 minutes because there was only 1 employee at a very busy store. When it was finally my turn I was told the truck I reserved had not been turned in. I would have to take the van. I was picking up 2 sofas from a warehouse and needed the space of the truck and the ramp. I was assured the sofas should fit but it had no ramp. I asked for a discount since I wasn’t getting what I needed. He said he would give me one. As he checked me out he said he would give me $.99 per mile instead of the $1.09 they charge for the van That was no discount. The truck was $.99 per mile. I’m paying the same thing for a van I did not want. No ramp and not sure the furniture would fit. Luckily it did fit after we took out the hand truck that took up so much space. . This allowed us to stack the sofas on top of each other. Once we took the sofas to my home, we had no ramp to move the sofas directly on to the porch that goes directly into my house. I’m approaching 70 years old and with my son-in-law we had to carry them up the steps. The hand truck was left at U-haul, knowing we wouldn’t fit both sofas in if we left it on the van. So that was my experience with U-haul. Horrible service, waited way past my pickup time. Did not get what I ordered and needed and still paid the full price of what I would have paid if I received what I ordered

I also think it was a bit pricey in terms of my tiny rental space. I know all costs are rising , but storage should not be so high as there is zero maintenance . The employees are wonderful and helpful and all of my possessions were safe.

Morris DThe location was pleasant, but my complaint is with UHAUL as a company. I would give UHAUL a -0 rating. They changed my pickup location without notifying me, and the new location was 30-35 minutes away. They even wanted to charge me for the extra mileage. As a result, I had to wait until the next day to pick up my truck, even though I had four movers lined up, and I had to pay them for their day even though I didn't have a truck. The next day, the truck they provided was a disaster. It had a flat tire, which I suspect was present when I picked it up, and the check-engine light was on, which made it a potential hazard. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with UHAUL's service, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I am so disappointed with the whole experience with UHAUL. not at all would I recommend it to anyone.

Dana MI elected to use the online self check-in. It was very tedious and took longer than just normal face-to-face. At one point I had to go through screens verifying the tag number and views of all sides of the truck for issues. You couldn't see any detail. All this while sitting in the truck trying to leave and meet our people. I was 30 minutes late. I will not use it again. When I finally got into the truck and drove about a mile I found out the play in the steering wheel was excessive. I kept having to "bump" the steering from left to right to keep the vehicle in the lane correctly. Unfortunately, I had wasted so much time trying to pick up the truck I didn't have the extra time to go back and start all over again. Turning in the truck was much easier as I dealt with a real person. The exchange was minimal since he was busy cleaning and moving another truck. I was so glad to be done with it that I didn't even think to mention the issue with steering. Overall, it got the job done but not the greatest experience.

Colin W | First ImpressionsI was moved out of my unit twice in the computer system. Then I was promised two months free rent. However, that was not followed through with. Therefore, I was put in lien status. When discussing this issue on the phone with a U-Haul employee and explaining the two promised free months, the employee lied and stated they were from the corporate office and screamed at me over the phone. Afterwards, I fixed the lien issue. Recently, I came out to unit and found that the lock from that previous lien was still on my unit. I called customer service and the first agent proceeded to send me back to the cue. I did have better experience with second agent; he made sure that I actually was connected to someone at the facility. However, the facility did not have a key and had to saw the lock off. This entire episode took at least 45 minutes during which time my 82-year-old mother was waiting for me in the car. Additionally, a previous phone agent stated that he would report the behavior of the staff member who lied. He stated I would receive a response after he turned in the report. I was never contacted either by phone, text or email! Customer service needs to improve drastically!

CECILIA R | Overall ExperienceThis is a facility and business preying on peoples with no where else to go during the pandemic. Secured a unit that was supposed to be 10x10 and get there to see its Unit 4000, which is 5x5x10H - when I asked was told there were not other units available. Since I was moving that day, and during COVID storage facilities in Asheville and surrounding were few and far between. They absolutely had other units available but knew I had no choice since I had also rented a uhaul truck for that same day to move. Compare cost of a bigger unit in Charlotte I have and chose to continue, where I pay $59/month this one cost the outrageous $124/month to start, and it was smaller! Then month by month the price just kept getting raised, using inflation as an excuse, knowing it was already wildly overpriced. Before I moved out rent was $139. If that was the only problem with this facility I would have probably just given below average. But then when I could not take the price hikes any longer and decided to move out and put everything in my unit in charlotte, we arrived to see the horrible conditions of my things and our unit. It was clear that whoever was cleaning the facility just simply walked through the inside halls with a leaf blower, pushing all the leaves an dust and dirt into the units, especially mine it appears, that had outward facing garages but inside open walls at the top. Showing no concern whatsoever for the folks things that were being storage on the other side of the walls. There was more dust, dirt and leaves in my unit that if I had stored thee things outside for the last few years. Water had clearly crept into the units from the garage doors not being sealed, as all of the wood furniture that was touching the ground had been rotting. Expensive furniture ruined, from the water and debris. This has been very easily the worst storage unit experience I have had in the carolinas and I've had more than 10. I will never use Uhaul again. And of course, when I notify Uhaul online that I am moving out and the unit is empty and lock removed on 9/29, I got confirmation back and expected to be done paying for you all to ruin my things, but no I am now being charge rent for the month of October, and late fees to boot. Yesterday got a lien notice. I will fight you all and this extra month of rent as long as it takes, you owe me thousands of dollars in ruined furniture and will not get a penny from me for a unit I didn't use in Oct.

She decided to get her things out of the storage and told me that she had left the key and card up front. When I came to change everything over to my name they couldn’t find the key and charged me to cut the lock off . It was all down hill from there.

When a friend volunteered to help me out recently, I stood beside the manager as he told my friend that he wanted me out ASAP and that I was not welcome to rent storage there or at any UHAUL facility. For the countless thousands of dollars I’ve spent with UHAUL this derision was something I will never forget. Your employee of Mike Miller as a manager is a disastrous public relations move in my experience. I would recommend JD as a manager. All the other staff have been more than pleasant to deal with.

I was not pleased with the previous manager’s lack of care in that department. I would be hesitant in recommending an outdoor unit there for several reasons- My storage unit always had leaves on the floor and puddles of water water beneath my boxes. I had to use a tiny ‘rope’ to pull my door open with, which left my hands hurting. Also , the door would come down and almost hit my head if I didn’t grab it on its way back down and give it an extra hard push over my head. These are easy fixes, so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend outdoor units were those things taken care of.

The surly manager would charge up demanding to know if I used my card. I told him yes I had just like last time he asked. He said he was just making sure policies were followed. This was ironic since he refused to EVER wear a mask despite city and company policies calling for him to wear one like most of the other staff. This was like walking in to see him flipping both middle fingers at those who wear masks. I got tired of it and closed my unit down early. We have options and you should take your storage business to places where they care. They will use short staffing due to Covid no doubt, but that wouldn't explain refusal to care about the health and safety of customers.

I placed a call expressing our concerns, along with the cause of the problem, but no one ever got back to me to talk more about it. I’ll consider other storage units in the future. But, for equipment rental, and staff friendliness, this facility is tops.

I moved out a week before the end of the month but kept receiving invoices for balance due. Tried to contact the GM many times but never heard back. After the most recent email talking of collections and liens I called again and finally spoke to a service agent elsewhere. The bill was taken care of but I still have not heard a word from manager at the facility. Not a good experience.

We were very happy we were getting our furniture out as I imagine if we were there longer we would not have been able to get the smell out. It was so bad it was hard to breathe while emptying the unit.

I witnessed them being very short with every person in there, acting as if we were all a bother & inconvenience during their busy day. After waiting 20-30 minutes to be set up with my storage unit (My second time coming back bc I was told they were too busy to do it earlier in the day), when I explained what I was there for, the guy literally dropped his head in frustration & audibly sighed while shaking it back & forth. They were very busy & seemingly short staffed, but it was unprofessional & extremely uncomfortable for them to take that out on every customer there. I won’t go back bc they made it a very uncomfortable experience.
